The Journey of Lweru Secondary School: A Legacy of Resilience, Growth, and Academic Excellence
Nestled in the heart of Buikwe District, Lweru Secondary School stands today as a beacon of hope, educational excellence, and community transformation.
Its history is a testament to what vision, community solidarity, and dedicated leadership can achieve against all odds.
The Early Seeds & The Plight of the Community
The roots of education in Lweru trace back to the 1950s, when the generous Family of Kirevu donated land that enabled the Muslim community of Buikwe to establish
Lweru UMEA Primary School.
For decades, however, a critical gap remained: there was no secondary school in the area.
After completing Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), many young Muslim learners were forced to drop out because their families lacked the means to send them elsewhere, and local options were severely limited.
In the 1980s, visionary Muslim parents pioneered initial efforts to open a secondary school. Though early attempts faced significant hurdles—most notably a shortage of local Muslim human resources to manage the institution—the community’s determination never wavered.
A Breakthrough Pledge & Historical Foundations
A historic turning point arrived in 1984 during a visit to Buikwe by the Minister of Local Government, Hon. Kalule Settala. The local Parish Chief of Lweru Parish, —Mr. Stanley Ssenyombi Kitabaazi, Bulere, boldly brought the plight of Muslim learners to the Minister’s attention.
Moved by the community’s petition, the Minister promised government assistance on one condition: the community had to secure land for the school.
Without hesitation, community pillars stepped forward. Respected leaders including:
Alongside other dedicated community members, generously volunteered their
time, energy, and resources to follow up on the Minister’s pledge and secure the school’s future.
Founding & Early Milestones (1985 – 2001)
In 1985, Lweru Secondary School officially opened its doors as a Government Grant-Aided School. It began humbly in a single classroom block donated by Lweru UMEA Primary School, serving a pioneer class of just five learners.
Under the guidance of its pioneer Headteacher, The Late Idd L. M. Mukalazi, the school was built literally from scratch. Through his tireless dedication until 2001, he transformed those humble beginnings into a respected institution.
(2001 – 2020)
Hajat Rehema Babita (2001 – 2019)
In 2001, Hajat Rehema Babita assumed leadership as Headteacher. Known as a true reformist, her tenure brought significant infrastructural modernization—including new classroom blocks constructed under the UPPET/APL 1 Project.
Her focus on academic standards and staff welfare saw student enrollment rise steadily from 612 to 866 learners.
Hajj Ibrahim Ssemakaadde (2019 – 2020)
Taking the reins during a period of administrative turbulence, Hajj Ibrahim Ssemakaadde brought composure, steadfastness, and an unwavering commitment to performance.
Though his tenure was brief, his leadership restored stability and set a firm direction for future growth.
The Modern Revolution:
Hajj Hamza Ahmed Ssebunya (2020 – Present)
In June 2020, Lweru Secondary School entered a transformative new chapter under the leadership of Hajj Hamza Ahmed Ssebunya.
His arrival marked far more than a routine transition—it sparked a complete institutional revolution.
As the visionary behind the school’s contemporary success, Hajj Ssebunya’s strategic administration has elevated Lweru S.S. into a regional powerhouse:
